WHEAT PHENOTYPING USING UAVS

The Wheat Phenotyping to Support Wheat Improvement and Adaptation of Wheat to Abiotic Stress Expert Working Groups of the Wheat Initiative are organizing a training course on the use of UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles)-based phenotyping in wheat research and wheat breeding.

The workshop is part of the Wheat Initiative IWC satellite meetings and workshops https://bit.ly/2Ia9CHc

The course topics include

  • Phenotyping with UAVs – a checklist
  • (Hardware, Software, Operating mode)
  • How to use UAVs to document the quality of trials vs
  • How to measure novel traits with UAVs
  • The dos and don’ts of UAV phenotyping –
  • The things that can go wrong you won’t find in publications
  • Camera and image calibration – making sure you start with good quality data
  • Plot identification – looking for a magic solution? You are not alone…
  • Image and spectral analysis – you got yourself a point cloud, now what?
  • How to extract traits from plot based data

The course will be held at the University of Saskatoon Campus between 19-20 July 2019 (weekend before IWC 2019).

02:00 pm

Welcome and tour de table:

  • Who I am, where I come from, what I’m doing with UAVs
  • ‘what I really like about UAVs…’
  • ‘the one thing that really annoys me about UAVs….’
  • ‘the one question I haven’t found an answer to….’

03:00 pm

Phenotyping with UAVs – a checklist

  • Hardware
  • Software
  • Regulation
  • Operating mode

Discussion and wrap up

Saturday, 20 July 2019

09:00 am

Camera and image calibration – making sure you start with good quality data

  • Vignetting correction
  • Camera geometric characterization
  • White balance / radiometric calibration
  • Camera resolution / focal length / altitude / speed definition

10:00 am

Plot identification – looking for a magic solution? You are not alone…

10:30 am

Coffee

10:45 am

Image and spectral analysis – you got yourself a point cloud, now what?

  • Spectral reflectance/radiance: physical meaning?
  • Point cloud: how to derive a good quality one

Several approaches:

  • Empirical transfer functions
  • Physical approaches with radiative transfer models
  • Segmentation
  • Object identification
  • Density estimation through machine learning

12:30 am

Lunch

02:00 pm

Congratulations, you’ve got plots!

  • How to extract traits like lodging, establishment, height etc.
  • Not all fields are made equal - how to adapt and calibrate a method for your specific environment
  • Monitoring is key!! How to get time consistent observations
