INTERNATIONAL WHEAT CONGRESS

The opportunity to connect and exchange

The International Wheat Congress (IWC) was merged from two original wheat international conferences, the International Wheat Genetics Symposium and the International Wheat Conference.

The IWC is a biennial event (find history below), and the 3rd edition will be held in Perth, Australia!

The 3rd Internationanl Wheat Congress

The International Wheat Congress serves as an important gathering for the global wheat community, providing a platform for leading experts, researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals to discuss advancements in the field of wheat breeding, genetics, genomics, and agronomy. The upcoming edition of the conference, scheduled for September 22-27, 2024, will be organised by the Centre for Crop & Food Innovation, Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia. The 3rd IWC will be held at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre (PCEC), in Perth, Western Australia. This Congress will provide a platform for researchers to present findings, share insights, and exchange ideas, which can contribute to enhancing the sustainability and resilience of wheat production systems. Policymakers and industry professionals attending the event will be kept updated on the latest trends and innovations in the wheat industry, fostering collaboration and driving advancements in the field.

We will keep you updated here on this site.

International Organising Committee

The International Organising Committee is composed of 15 individuals representing different wheat growing countries and is in charge of developing the scientific programme.

IWC history

The 1st International Wheat Congress was held July 21-29, 2019 in Saskatoon, Canada. It was an overwhelming success with over 900 registered delegates. The 1st IWC included a balanced programme which encompassed six areas of wheat research. These areas were:

  • Wheat Diversity, Evolution, and Genetic Resources

  • Structural and Functional Genomics of Wheat and Wheat Relatives

  • Wheat Improvement: Breeding, Physiology, and Enabling Technologies

  • Wheat Production Systems: Environment, Sustainability, and Management

  • Protecting Yield: Resistance to Biotic and Abiotic Stresses

  • Wheat Uses: Functionality, Nutrition, Safety and Human Health

Host: University of Saskatchewan

The 2nd IWC was planned for 2021 in Beijing, but had to be delayed to 2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2nd IWC, was jointly hosted by the Crop Science Society of China (CSSC) and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) under the supervision of an International Organising Committee. The theme of the 2nd IWC was “Resilience and Sustainability” and provided excellent opportunities for participants from around the world to share the latest progress and to develop recommendations for future wheat in terms of research, technology, and transfer. A hybrid form of on-site lectures and online broadcast was adopted.

Hosts: Crop Science Society of China (CSSC) and Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS)

Organiser: Institute of Crop Sciences, CAAS

Co-organizers: China Agricultural University; Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences; National Innovation Centre for Bio-breeding Industry, Henan Academy of Agricultural Sciences; Nanjing Agricultural University; Northwest A&F University; China National Seed Group Co., LTD.; International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT)
